Qatar Airways is proud to announce that it will operate a new service between Doha and Birmingham, in the United Kingdom, from 30th March 2016, adding to its existing services to London Heathrow, Manchester and Edinburgh.

With eight flights a week, including two flights on Saturdays, passengers travelling to and from Birmingham will have access to convenient and seamless transfers at the airline’s state-of-the-art hub Hamad International Airport. Birmingham is the largest and most populous city outside of London and is situated in the West Midlands. The economy is largely dominated by the service sector and the city is an important transport, retail, events and conference hub.

The announcement of this new route further strengthens Qatar Airways’ commitment to the UK regions, with Birmingham being the centre for the largest concentration of businesses outside of London, boasting 34,285 companies including over 700 international firms. The city attracts nearly 34 million people a year for both business and pleasure and is ideally situated at the centre of the UK’s rail and motorway network. Qatar Airways Group Chief Executive, His Excellency Mr. Akbar Al Baker said: “We are delighted to announce Birmingham as Qatar Airways’ fourth destination in the United Kingdom from March 2016. This additional route strengthens Qatar Airways’ commitment to the regions across the UK and will create new commercial and leisure links between the city of Birmingham and the 152 destinations served by the airline. We look forward to welcoming new passengers on board our award-winning product, and to connecting Birmingham to the rest of our rapidly expanding network.”

Birmingham Airport Chief Executive Officer, Paul Kehoe said: “This is fantastic news for both Birmingham Airport and the region, and is our tenth new airline to announce or launch this year. Not only will our passengers have the choice of flying with the award winning carrier to Doha’s state-of-the-art hub Hamad International Airport, they will have a choice of 152 destinations served by the airline, including South East Asia, China and Australasia.”

The route will be operated by a Boeing 787 Dreamliner which has a two-cabin configuration, comprising of 22 seats in Business Class and 232 Economy Class seats. All seats include individual television screens, with Economy Class customers benefitting from a screen 10.6-inches wide, offering the latest inflight entertainment comprised of up to 2,000 options while experiencing the airline’s award-winning service. Every seat is an aisle seat in Business Class where passengers can catch up on sleep in a fully-flat bed or make productive use of their time utilising the large work surface area. Passengers can also stay connected while travelling with the option of Wi-Fi which is available throughout the aircraft.

Thanks to HIA’s modern design, passengers from Birmingham can now take advantage of convenient, quick and seamless onward connections to 152 key business and leisure destinations across Qatar Airways' ever-expanding global network, including those in Asia, the Indian subcontinent, the Middle East and Africa, with the West Midlands in the UK now easily accessible from cities such as Mumbai, New Delhi, Bangkok and Hong Kong. Connections between countries such as Pakistan and Australia to Birmingham have never been easier thanks to Qatar Airways. In Pakistan the airline serves seven destinations including Karachi, Multan, Faisalabad, Sialkot, Peshawar, Lahore and Islamabad. The airline has also recently announced two new destinations in Australia, Sydney and Adelaide, commencing in March and May 2016 respectively, to complement its existing Perth and Melbourne services.

Qatar Airways’ home, Hamad International Airport, houses one of the world’s largest and most luxurious Business Class lounges – the Al Mourjan Business Lounge – and also has over 40,000 square metres of retail space and restaurants that includes a selection of more than 70 retail and 30 food and beverage outlets. Qatar Airways Cargo today announced that according to the latest IATA international FTK figures, it is now the third largest international cargo airline in the world. This is phenomenal growth for the rapidly expanding company, which has risen to the number three position from 16th place in just five years, and now boasts a freighter fleet of six Airbus 330s, eight Boeing 777s and one Boeing 747.

“Being in the top three international cargo carriers in the world reflects the hard work and commitment of the Qatar Airways Cargo team over the past five years,” said His Excellency Mr. Akbar Al Baker, Group Chief Executive of Qatar Airways. “Our cargo capability is a major component in driving our group success and growth, and it will remain a focus of our expansion in the coming years.” At today’s press conference at Hamad International Airport in Doha, Qatar, Mr. Al Baker also revealed plans to create a second, even larger cargo terminal at the airline’s hub. The new facility, combined with the current facility, will allow Qatar Airways Cargo to handle 4.4 million tonnes of cargo a year, an increase from today’s 1.4 million tonne capacity.

Qatar Airways Cargo rises 1 [qatarisbooming.com].jpg“The new cargo terminal, which is scheduled to open in 2018, underlines our commitment to continued growth and expansion in line with the airline’s group objectives for the future,” said Qatar Airways Chief Officer Cargo, Mr. Ulrich Ogiermann. “Having the ability to handle 4.4 million tonnes of cargo a year will put Qatar Airways Cargo into another league, and enhance the efficiency and service already offered at our existing state-of-the-art facility,” he added. Mr. Al Baker indicated that future plans include building further capacity for cargo at Hamad International Airport, to up to 7 million tonnes, after current expansion plans are complete.

Further announcements made today at the press conference, which was attended by key international cargo media, include plans to launch two new speciality products: QR Equine and QR Express. QR Equine offers a five-star service and world-class facility for the transportation of horses managed by a dedicated team of experts. With Qatar Airways Cargo’s modern fleet of Airbus and Boeing freighters with controlled temperature zones, a network of more than 150 destinations, comfortable and spacious horse stalls, and dedicated grooms that accompany the horses, the airline guarantees the care, comfort, safety and reliability for the smooth transportation of every equine guest. On the ground at its state-of-art hub in Doha, Qatar Airways Cargo’s Live Animal facility offers an equally sophisticated environment with air conditioned holding stalls, a paddock and on-site veterinary personnel.

QR Express provides clients with the opportunity to book through a simplified system with high boarding priority and rapid handling, guaranteeing the speedy delivery of their cargo. Other key features include short and flexible close outs, quick and dedicated ramp transfer (for transit express), as well as priority loading at origin and unloading at final destination and speedy retrieval at final destination (approximately 90mins). Qatar Airways Cargo commenced operations in 1997 and has since experienced phenomenal growth in both its fleet size and network. This expansion shows no signs of slowing down with delivery of five new freighters scheduled for the next year and significant network enhancement to destinations such as Durban, Boston, Adelaide and Sydney in the coming months.

Tbilisoba is an annual festival held in Georgia in October every year to celebrate the diverse history of the Georgian capital, Tbilisi. First celebrated in 1979, the event has become synonymous in Georgia with open air concerts and music from the country’s rich cultural history. To mark the event in Qatar, the Georgian Embassy hosted a day of celebrations on Wednesday 21st October which culminated in a special performance of traditional folk songs by the Georgian choir, Georgika, with guests enjoying a reception in the garden area of the newly refurbished Sheraton Hotel.

Qatar Airways Group Chief Executive, His Excellency Mr. Akbar Al Baker said: “Qatar Airways’ services to Tbilisi continue to cater to a growing demand of passengers attracted by the hospitality and quality of our on-board product, as well as the seamless connectivity offered by Hamad International Airport, an airport designed by an airline with the passenger experience firmly in mind.” Speaking at the event, Her Excellency Ekaterine Meiering - Mikadze, Ambassador of Georgia to the State of Qatar, highlighted the importance of celebrating the history of Georgia, a country connected to Qatar Airways’ global network with daily scheduled flights.

Qatar Airways Cargo has welcomed the seventh Airbus A330F and first Boeing 747F nose loader aircraft to its fleet at its home base in Hamad International Airport, Doha. Continuing on its trajectory of rapid growth and expansion, the world’s third largest international cargo carrier now features a fleet of 16 freighters including seven Airbus A330F, eight Boeing 777F and one Boeing 747F.

Qatar Airways Cargo is scheduled to receive further aircraft next year and is expected to expand its fleet to a total of 21 freighters by 2017, demonstrating the airline’s unwavering commitment to developing one of the strongest air cargo fleets in the skies.

“We are delighted to welcome the seventh Airbus A330F and our first Boeing 747F nose loader to our growing freighter fleet,” said Mr. Ulrich Ogiermann, Qatar Airways Chief Officer Cargo. “The arrival of this new aircraft brings our total fleet up to 16 freighters and is an important addition to the airline at a time when we are experiencing unprecedented growth. Increasing our capacity in tandem with increasing our network reach is an essential part of our strategy for the coming years and we expect to have a total of 21 freighters in our fleet by 2017.”

The new aircraft is currently scheduled to support the airline’s busy network by increasing frequencies to Bahrain, Brussels, Chennai, Hyderabad, London Stansted and Mumbai. The A330-200F is the world’s most modern mid-size freighter. Powered by Rolls Royce Trent 772B engines, the A330 freighter can carry a maximum gross pay load of up to 68 tonnes, with a range capability of up to 4,000 nautical miles. This range and pay load capability provides flexibility for both regional and intercontinental operations. The A330-200F’s large main-deck cargo door allows the aircraft to accept all commonly-used pallets and containers, enabling the transport of a full range of cargo – from high-value consumer goods to express packages and perishables. The main deck cargo compartments and lower deck cargo compartments on A330-200F are ventilated and have temperature control options of 5°C to 25°C.

The B747 freighter is ideal for the requirements of express cargo and industrial freight operators. Powered by Pratt & Whitney engines, the B747F is capable of flying 4,100 nautical miles with full load and is most appropriate for short- to medium-length international flights. The B747 freighter has seating for up to eight cargo attendants or grooms for horses. The B747F has a main deck nose door and a mechanised cargo handling system. The nose door swings up so that pallets or containers up to 40 ft (12 m) can be loaded straight in on motor-driven rollers.

An automatic temperature control system is installed to maintain pre-selected temperatures in the flight compartment, supernumerary compartment, and main deck cargo compartment. The temperatures of the forward and aft lower deck cargo compartments are controlled separately. The temperature can be set and maintained between 4°C and 29°C. Qatar Airways Cargo recently announced at a packed press conference in Doha that according to the latest IATA international FTK figures it is now the third largest international cargo airline in the world. This is phenomenal growth for the rapidly expanding company, which has risen to the number three position from 16th place in just five years.

Further announcements made at the press conference included plans to launch two new specialty products: QR Equine and QR Express. Qatar Airways’ Group Chief Executive, His Excellency Mr. Akbar Al Baker also revealed plans for a new multi-deck cargo facility to be opened by 2018 at Hamad International Airport. When complete the new facility will increase the hub’s overall capacity to 4.4 million tonnes per year with the potential for further expansion to 7 million tonnes in the future.

Qatar Museums  (QM), under the patronage of its Chairperson, Her Excellency Sheikha Al Mayassa bint Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, and Hamad International Airport (HIA)  are proud to announce the unveiling of a number of new public art installations by both Qatari and international artists at the airport.

QM has installed two new permanent pieces which are now on display for passengers and visitors to enjoy at the airport: “Arctic Nurseries of El Dorado” by British artist Marc Quinn, and “Untitled” by Italian artist Rudolf Stingel. In addition, an unconventional sculpture of the iconic desert horse by acclaimed Qatari artist Ali Hassan is set to be installed in HIA in the first quarter of 2016, Hassan’s third piece to go on show at the airport.

The new pieces will join the growing collection of sculptures and images by Qatari and international artists at the airport, including works by four Qatari artists: Amal Al Raban, Ali Hassan, Mubarak Al Malik and Salman Al Malik, in the Oryx and Al Maha lounges. A number of further artworks are also planned for installation at the airport in the coming weeks and months. This makes HIA a space where art and architecture combine to create an immersive visual environment, which provides a unique experience for the passengers and visitors at HIA.

Mansoor bin Ebrahim Al Mahmoud, Acting Chief Executive Officer of Qatar Museums, said: “QM continues to place art by local, regional and international artists in prominent public spaces throughout Qatar. The art at HIA inspires millions of visitors, residents and transfer passengers who fly through the airport each year, and it proves that art can be enjoyed far beyond the confines of an art gallery. These newest works in HIA signify the latest chapter in our vision at Qatar Museums to continue to bring world-class art to our people.”

Engr. Badr Mohammed Al Meer, Chief Operating Officer at HIA said: “HIA prides itself for being an innovative exhibition space. Art is an integral part of HIA, having been designed to house permanent and temporary exhibitions. Passengers are exposed to a diverse set of artistic media including paintings, sculpture, electronic and interactive installations.  Our airport terminal is a public space that welcomes millions of people every year and is therefore an ideal space to interact with art. The exposure that such a venue gives artists, especially budding Qatari artists, is exceptional.” Marc Quinn’s mesmerising artwork “The Nurseries of El Dorado” is a representation of an almost mythical world. Comprising of a number of bronze sculptures, Quinn creates a series of hybrid plants by taking elements from different vegetation and carefully piecing them together, before casting them in bronze.

Rudolf Stingel’s work reflects on the passage of time. His artwork at HIA is a sample of one of his famous large-scale interactive pieces. Stingel covered three surfaces with reflective, aluminium-faced insulation panels, before inviting members of the construction team at HIA to draw on the soft walls at the time of the airport’s construction. The walls were then cast in copper and electroplated with gold, before a number of pieces were selected for permanent display at HIAAli Hassan’s sculptural artwork at HIA will be an unconventional interpretation of the iconic desert horse, represented by different forms of the Arabic letter “ن” (“n”). Hassan used a range of intricate sculpting techniques to create the magnificent 8m x 6m sculpture.

QM has worked with local, regional and international artists for over five years to commission and acquire artworks for key locations in and around Hamad International Airport. The art comprises a mix of site-specific creations as well as pieces which have been carefully selected for the airport. The first international installation, “Lamp Bear” by Swiss artist Urs Fischer, was installed in a prominent location in the centre of the airport, and Dutch artist Tom Claassen produced a series of sculptures of the Oryx, an antelope native to the Arabian Peninsula, which appear as a herd in the arrivals hall of the airport.

Public Art is a central programme in QM’s mission to push the boundaries of the traditional museum model and to offer cultural experiences in public spaces. The art installed at Hamad International Airport supports this goal as well as the pillars of Qatar’s National Vision 2030 of education and engagement with Qatari society.
